MERSTHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL
At Merstham Primary School our vision statement A community growing learning and achieving together clearly sets out what we wish to achieve as a school community. Embedded in our vision are our values:- Community, Aiming High, Learning to Learn and wellbeing
Intent
At Merstham Primary School, we believe that Design and Technology helps to prepare children for the developing world and encourages them to become curious and creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team. We encourage our children to use their creativity and understanding when developing ideas, planning, making products and evaluating them. Whilst enabling them to talk about what they like and dislike when designing and making.
At Merstham Primary School, the Design and Technology curriculum combines skills, knowledge, concepts and values to enable children to tackle real problems. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, computing and art.
Implementation
All classes offer opportunities to study food and nutrition, often linked to study of countries. We consider the seasonal aspects of our food supplies and promote a real understanding of where food comes from.
All year groups participate in at least three DT projects per year. Part of the DT process is to plan in detail, create and then carefully evaluate.
Children are taught these across all year groups. DT helps to prepare children for the developing world and encourages them to become curious and creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team. We encourage our children to use their creativity skills when developing ideas, planning, making products and evaluating them, whilst enabling them to talk about what they like and dislike when designing and making.
There is am emphasis on the ‘how’ children learn, developing children's independence and creativity within the subject.
Impact of the Design Technology Curriculum
Assessment of children's learning in Design Technology is an ongoing monitoring of children's understanding, knowledge and skills by the class teacher, throughout lessons. This assessment is then used to inform differentiation, support and challenge required by the children.
